Ilia N. Danef is a partner in our Financial Services Law group.
Mr. Danef joined Heenan Blaikie as an associate in 1997 after completing his articles at the firm in 1996. He left for five years to work in the London and Amsterdam banking group of a major international law firm and subsequently rejoined Heenan Blaikie.
Mr. Danef has acted as lead counsel for banks and borrowers in relation to many different types of financings including acquisition financings, investment grade loans, telecom financings, asset based loans, export credit financings, project financings, loans to sovereigns and general corporate loans. He has acted for some of the largest international banks and private equity houses in syndicated as well as bilateral financings.
While abroad, Mr. Danef also gained business experience as a result of a seven-month secondment with the investment grade syndications team at ABN AMRO Bank N.V. During this secondment he also assisted the leveraged finance and telecoms teams.
Mr. Danef was awarded the Blake, Cassels & Graydon Award in Business Associations in 1993-1994 while he was a student at Osgoode Hall Law School. He was also on the University of Toronto’s Dean’s Honour Roll from 1990 to 1992 and was recipient of the J.W. Billes Scholarship for Academic Excellence in 1990-1991.
Mr. Danef is fluent in English, French, Dutch and Bulgarian.
