Ronald F. Caza Ronald F. Caza has been exclusively practising advocacy in both official languages since his call to the Bar of the Province of Ontario in 1989. He was with the law firm of Nelligan O’Brien Payne for 15 years prior to joining Heenan Blaikie, where he is now a partner and a member of the firm’s National Management Committee.
Mr. Caza focuses his practice in all areas of civil litigation, including constitutional law, religious and other organizations defence, pertaining to cases of abuse, employment law, lawsuits for personal injury, for breach of business contracts and administrative law.
Mr. Caza has published a number of articles on various legal subjects and has been a guest speaker at many conferences throughout the country, organized for members of various provincial lawyer associations as well as numerous professional, cultural and social organizations.
Mr. Caza is quite active in professional and social associations. A former director of the Montfort Hospital, he was Chairman of the Board for United Way/Centraide Ottawa and the Thomas More Lawyers' Guild of Ottawa. He chaired four annual conventions of the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario, the most recent one held in July of 2005 in Paris, France. He has been one of the organizers of the Laskin Moot Competition, a national bilingual competition for law faculties, for over 10 years. Mr. Caza is past President of the Social Planning Council of Ottawa-Carleton and of the Centre parascolaire des pionniers. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the Regroupement des gens d’affaires de la Capitale Nord, L’Écho d’un people and Franco Biz as well as Vice-Chair of the Board of the Fondation franco-ontarienne and Action-Housing, and as a director of Christie Lake Kids. Furthermore, Mr. Caza is a member of the Canadian Bar Association’s Awards Committee in charge of selecting the recipients of the Association’s prestigious scholarships and awards.
In 2000, Mr. Caza was the recipient of the Grandmaître prize for his involvement in the Franco-Ontarian community of Ottawa. In 2004, he received the Order of La Pléiade from the Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie in recognition of his exceptional contribution to Francophones of all regions. Then, in 2005 he was made a member of the Ordre de la Francophonie de Prescott et Russell, in recognition of his dedication to the defence of French-speaking minorities. Finally, in 2006 Mr. Caza received the Richelieu International Medal for his efforts in promoting and defending the rights of the Francophone minorities in Ontario.
From 1989 to 1998, he lectured in civil procedure at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa, in the French language Common Law section. From 1999 to 2005, he was responsible for the Civil Litigation component at the Bar Admission Course (Francophone section) in Ottawa. Education
